One of two observed fires at the Arkema plant in Crosby, Tx.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the residents of Texas affected by Hurricane Harvey. It looks like we might be in for a long hurricane season, and no amount of words can express the hardships many Americans will face after the storms pass this year.

Making life even more challenging for the residents of Crosby, Texas affected by Hurricane Harvey, they also had to evacuate a 1.5 mile radius around the Arkema chemical plant after an explosion there August 31. When the facility lost power, an organic peroxide ignited and caught fire after the refrigeration units failed. The toxic smoke caused one police officer present at the scene to be hospitalized with eye and throat irritation.

While Hurricane Harvey was classified as an 1000 year event, we must take better precautions with dangerous chemicals, where they are manufactured and located. It reminds me of Fukushima and the nuclear locations along U.S. coastlines that are vulnerable to flooding events.

I don't have answers to all these problems, but I do know how to play my part and understand my role. Deforestation caused by poor city planning placed thousands of Houston area residents in harms way. Those low areas were historically known to be vulnerable, and the forestation there was a natural barrier that absorbed flood waters. This is a reflection of how irresponsible oversight and treating the Earth as a limitless source of raw materials without regard to sustainability destroys the natural systems that provide us prosperity and protect us. That mission drives me to find the best ways to manufacture a product that I know, and gives me hope that we can achieve a sustainable balance between humans and the planet we call home. I continue to bring awareness to this topic after reading an opinion article yesterday in The Bangor Daily News about protecting firefighters. The author opined that eliminating the use of flame retardants in couches was a bad idea, if you weighed the benefits of surviving a fire over everyday personal health. The contributor of the article is also the chair of the Science Advisory Council for the North American Flame Retardant Alliance, which is a well-known lobby group for big chemical. Here is another classic case of how the industry fights legislation by using a disenfranchised group as a political shield to protect its interest, cast doubt and sway opinion.
The movie “Thank You For Smoking” highlights how the alcohol, tobacco and firearm industry has perfected this message to bend the truth, and make the public question what is in their best interest. Also an uncomfortably, goofy love story of sorts, the ending moral reminds us that as long as there is money in politics, special interest legislation will be defended by men with machine gun mouths and giant marketing budgets.
With every victory declared in the fight against dangerous and toxic chemicals in our everyday items, there will be a reaction, and one that is also marketable. The ruling change of TB 117 doesn’t force any manufacturer to remove the chemical flame retardants, but does require labeling which must be easily recognizable. The labeling doesn’t require listing of any other chemicals used in the manufacturing process either. There is a lot of “greenwashing” by the large manufacturers who find it easier to change marketing than actual processes that make furniture non-toxic, eco-friendly and sustainable.
At EcoSelect, we’ve spent more than a decade pursuing the most sustainable and environmentally safe product available on the market. As a small business, we can’t afford to cut corners or spend
on marketing, so we attempt to provide the best value we can by selling
directly to you without the typical retailer costs.Eco-Friendly Kenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12394138812285391565noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7593952602423043052.post-61348101714027505302017-06-26T21:19:00.002-07:002017-06-26T21:19:58.380-07:00The Fight for Safe Furniture is Not Over

Chemical-flame retardants can be added into several materials
during the manufacturing process, from the cushions to the many
layers of fabrics required in the upholstery process.

When California instituted their non-flame retardant regulations, the general public thought that their worries about chemicals in furniture was over.

Not exactly, as stated by the Green Science Policy:

“In 2008, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission proposed a smolder test for fabric similar to TB-117-2013 called 16 CFR Part 1634 that would not lead to the use of flame retardant chemicals. There is no timeline for possible implementation of this standard.”

Just like a host of other items in American households that are the source of toxins, furniture can harbor a host of chemicals that are harmful to children, adults, and pets.

There has been a disconnect as a result of manufacturers, department stores, and outlets mixing safety issues and merchandising messages in order to jump on to the environmental wave.

More consumers are increasingly aware of the over-saturation of chemicals in our daily lives. The story about laminate flooring imported from China did get visibility. It focused on the presence of formaldehyde in the product.

However, not as well-known is that furniture made with pressed-wood (also known as particle board or fiber board) has formaldehyde in the adhesives that are used. This same cancer-causing chemical is also used as a finish for some permanent-press fabrics.

Ironically, there are numerous lists on the internet of companies that have eliminated toxic flame retardants from their products but may have other components that are not safe.

The manufacture and retailing of furniture is a multi-billion-dollar industry. Unfortunately, when it comes to money, not everyone is going to be forthcoming about how and from where they source their materials. Actually, by the time a product gets to a large outlet, the chances are very good that the sales help doesn’t have any knowledge about these issues.

Jerry Brown, the Governor of California, has been instrumental in pushing for new environmental stands across the board. He has already stated that he will lead his state in an effort to meet the Paris Climate Agreement’s goals, regardless of what the federal government does.

On flame retardants he said: Toxic flame retardants are found in every
thing from high chairs to couches and a growing body of evidence suggests that these chemicals harm human health and the environment. We must find better ways to meet fire safety standards by reducing and eliminating—wherever possible— dangerous chemicals.”

At EcoSelect Furniture, we never had them in the first place!

It is important to remain vigilant about all aspects of the elements used in furniture, whether made in America or overseas.

We will continue to do so.

It starts with certified, sustainable
Poplar and Maple hardwood frames

Our customers are concerned with buying furniture that is not made with toxic fire retardants or other chemicals.

Although that is a key feature that sets us apart from other manufacturers, our commitment to sustainability is of equal concern.

Furniture is the third largest user of lumber, after construction and packaging. Although most consumers are aware of the problems facing rain forests, knowledge of the specifics are under the radar.

The Amazon Rainforest is consistently ravished for it's hardwoods, mostly illegally, and then exported on a global, unsustainable scale. This wood finds its way into both expensive and inexpensive furniture.

Rainforests function as virtual lungs for the planet. They absorb carbon dioxide and produce oxygen more efficiently than other forests. This helps the world’s climate to stabilize. In addition, rainforests are home to 50 percent of all plant and animal habitat species on earth. The existence of global rain forests protects against soil erosion, drought, and floods. It also supports the indigenous populations who have been dwelling there for centuries.

An example: China has an ongoing call for rosewood, because it is the type of wood in demand for their classical furniture designs. With an increased supply and demand situation, rosewood has become the most highly trafficked property in the world.

Forest crimes are not the only part of the picture. Trees are an integral part of the ecosystem which is connected to the control of insects, disease, and droughts.

Government involvement in the United States protects and regulates forests. One of the better-known rules, the Idaho law, requires forest practices to protect soil and water, and guarantee reforestation
after trees have been harvested.

Illegal logging is the source for about 15 percent of lumber used in furniture. That is why we utilize legally and sustainably sourced wood, bought from vendors with a verifiable chain of custody. It is tagged with the label “SFI certified,” short for Sustainable Forestry Initiative.

Ecoselect purchases only Poplar or Maple, which is then kiln-dried to stabilize it. Since it comes from the mountains of North Carolina and Tennessee, the delivery transportation footprint is relatively low.

Curious to learn more about how each individual can make a difference, via their purchases and life style? Take this Ecological Footprint Quiz. This April is turning into a blockbuster month for environmental action.

April 22 was both Earth Day, and the March for Science. On April 29, people will gather in Washington, D.C. to show their support for taking steps to keep the planet safe. The 2017 People’s Climate March is expecting huge crowds there, and around the nation through satellite events.

The first Earth Day was held in 1970. Gaylord Nelson, a Governor and Senator from Wisconsin, saw the writing on the wall. He was particularly concerned about the oil spill which had occurred in Santa Barbara in 1969.

Taking a page from the activism of the 1960s, Nelson pulled together citizens to become part of a grassroots protest that would bring attention to protecting the earth.

As we learn about diminishing resources, disappearing animal species, and experience extreme weather events more often, it’s clear that we all must play a part in moving the needle towards sustainability.

Many of our customers connect with us specifically because they are concerned about buying furniture that comes with the assurance: Safe for the family.

It is for that reason that we always have our finger on the pulse of the latest health information. I have written previously about the issue of flame retardants in furniture before from legislation to the evolution of its use (in response to tobacco related fires). We were also mentioned in a Dr. Oz segment exploring the hazards of chemicals in furniture and manufacturers who shun them

Now, there are new findings to share with you and they are concerning.

A March 2017 study conducted by researchers at Oregon State University has found a connection between pre-school children exposed to common flame retardant chemicals and behavioral issues.

A complete abstract was published in the Environmental Health journal, titled “Cross-sectional study of social behaviors in preschool children and exposure to flame retardants.” The stated objective was to determine if “flame retardant exposure was associated with measurable differences in social behaviors among children ages 3–5 years.”

Conclusions indicated that children with higher flame retardant exposures “exhibited poorer social skills in three domains that play an important role in a child’s ability to succeed academically and socially.”

One of the authors of the paper, Molly Kile, an environmental epidemiologist, stated, “When we analyzed behavior assessments and exposure levels, we observed that the children who had more exposure to certain types of the flame retardant were more likely to exhibit externalizing behaviors such as aggression, defiance, hyperactivity, inattention and bullying.”
What better time to talk about love seats than the month of February, when Valentine’s Day is smack in the middle of the month.

Ironically, although this piece of furniture is the prototype of a romantic seating arrangement, its beginnings actually have nothing to do with courting or love.

The design concept was developed to accommodate women’s voluminous clothing during a period that included hoop skirts and yards of fabric. A woman needed a seat all to herself, in order to spread out her couture while she was at rest.

The terminology of “Love Seat” didn’t come about until the 1800s, when many pieces made replicated an S-shape. It allowed a couple to face each other for personal conversation. That’s where the intimacy began and ended. There was the safety and propriety of an arm rest to physically divide them!

Today, the Love Seat has evolved into a piece of furniture that is multifaceted in both use and design.

Many of our customers in urban areas, especially New York City, look to this construction as the perfect solution to get more seating into their apartment’s limited square footage. In houses in suburban areas, we have created Love Seats specifically to suit a bedroom setting.

Most frequently, the Love Seat is an alternative to the traditional L-shaped configuration of sofa and chair. When facing each other, with a low table in between, they become a perfect duo for formatting an entertaining unit suited for conversation and get-togethers.

We offer ten styles, matching all of our collections (except the Malibu). Nine of them can converted to sleeper sofas. With a pull-out bed frame and ecofriendly mattress, the problem of where to put the overnight guest is solved!

In every conversation I have with customers about how we make our sofas sustainable and without toxic elements, I always begin at the very beginning with our frames. Like a house, the design and durability of our product depends on a good foundation.

In the January 2017 issue of Southern Living, there was an article by Deb Schwartz outlining, “Sofas Deconstructed.” There is a sidebar feature on page 103 titled, “The Anatomy of a Sofa: The Frame.” Schwartz noted, “The most important part of any sofa is the frame.”

We couldn’t agree more!

Having spent four decades in the furniture business, I have always believed that a superior frame construction is essential to the longevity and comfort of a chair or sofa.

It all starts with solid hardwood frames with a lifetime guarantee.

At EcoSelect Furniture, we begin by using top quality lumber from locally certified sources. One and a quarter inch (5/4”) kiln dried maple or poplar hardwood are our woods of choice. Both are abundant in the eastern forests of the United States, grow relatively quickly, and are “straight grained” which allows them to resist warping. One of their top qualities is their density, a plus for holding screws and adhesives well.
To ensure security and strength, we double-dowel the joints and secure the connections with a non-toxic glue. Every element is important!

Furniture can take a beating, and we build ours with an eye to that inevitability. To ensure that corners and high stress areas are exceedingly resilient, we use hardwood corner blocks. For increased strength, both glue and screws are applied to secure them.

A drill down is given to the issue of what Schwartz calls “the second-most important construction consideration.” That is the “sofa’s suspension system,” otherwise known as the springs. I was thrilled to see the reference to “eight-way hand-tied springs” as the definition of a “quality product.” This method of tying springs in eight directions is a cornerstone of our production methods. In addition, we put a second set of springs inside our seat cushions for added comfort and durability.

Just like the article outlines, I always ask potential buyers about the situation that the chair or sofa will be placed in. Is it a formal setting? Will it be a family room with kids and animals as regular users? This helps them pinpoint the best choice.

There was no specific mention of flame-retardant materials in the run down, but by now, you know that is non-toxic materials is the key feature of an EcoSelect piece of furniture.

Oh, and by the way, if you check out the magazine, I would say that our designs fall into the category of Classic and Handsome!Eco-Friendly Kenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12394138812285391565noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7593952602423043052.post-12727521174268228712016-12-28T12:09:00.001-08:002016-12-28T12:26:40.303-08:00Happy 2017 from Ken and EcoSelect

Another year has come to an end…

As I look back over 2016, I am grateful for the new friends and clients who have become a part of the EcoSelect community.

EcoSelect, in turn, has continued to welcome support and allies among those who share our belief that furniture can and should be both beautiful and safe.

Regardless of what transpires in terms of national regulations, EcoSelect is pledged to continuing to stand by its commitment to toxic-free sofas and chairs.

That means no fire retardants or formaldehyde glues. It stands for using sustainable materials including hemp and certified lumber. Equally important, we support the expertise of local craftsmen and women, who carry out the individualized labor that goes into making each piece of our furniture.

We couldn’t do it without you!

Our solid hardwood frames are designed to last

I always enjoy getting calls and e-mails from customers who are excited about the delivered items they have ordered.

Recently, “Jackie” wrote: “We received our loveseat today and it is fantastic. Thanks for making our third sofa for our home.”

“Joseph,” another repeat buyer, informed me about the sleeper sofa he was purchasing. He wrote, “I bought the exact same one in May 2015 for my studio apartment, and it held up so well I am getting another one to fill out the living room in my first house.”

Ironically, our loveseats and sleeper sofa are two items that customers are not always fully aware of as options.

Loveseats are designed to complement the seating of a sofa with an additional two seats in an “L” shaped setting. It creates the feeling of a sectional, but is more flexible in terms of placement. Most are about 65 inches long compared to the 85 inches of the average sofa.

In apartments, where space is at a premium, loveseats can be paired, by situating them directly facing each other. This allows for an intimate seating and conversation setting.

Note to Urban dwellers: The Savile sofa is our “apartment” size sofa at 74” long. It comes with two generous seating cushions.

Sleeper sofas also fulfill the function of space saver. All of our styles can be ordered as sleeper/sofas, except for the Malibu and Georgetown – due to construction constraints.

Sofa lines take a queen size mattress, with the exception of the Savile, Central Park, and Highland models which accommodate only a full (double) mattress.

The folding frame mechanism is top quality and weight. It has an anti-tilt function to ensure that contact with the floor is maintained at all times. A double-locking TV headrest position is included, to raise the head when desired. To guarantee no-sag support there are heavy duty tubes and wires, and the legs are one piece units for enhanced stability and strength.

Our mattresses are 5 inches thick, with a 312-coil spring unit encased by a damask cover. The mattress is hypo-allergenic.

And in case you missed it…

The Arlington, Central Park, Highland, Logan Square, and Presidio models can be ordered as recliners. Options include a swivel base or a tilt swivel base. No handle is needed to get to a comfy position! The recliner mechanism is a “push on the arms” style. The chair has up to a 350-pound weight capacity. The mechanism is a three position (sitting, TV, full recline) unit with excellent extension and elevation.

Store your remotes and magazines in the Club Ottoman

We also do a series of ottomans for folks who enjoy putting their feet up after a long day. Our multi-function Club Ottoman does well with city dwellers always looking for any extra inch of space. It is equipped with lift-lid magazine, newspaper and book storage, and a tilt-out tray for a television remote or other electronic controller storage. We all have plenty of those! The lift lid features “toy-box” spring loaded hinges which close slowly and under pressure, to prevent pinching and finger injury.

The Club Ottoman is sized for the club chairs in our line at 28 inches wide and 18 inches high. The height is a few inches lower than the seat height of chairs, designed for maximum comfort.

When it comes to choosing ottomans, don’t be afraid to mix and match. You can do a hemp covering even if you have a leather sofa or chair.

Our goal at EcoSelect is to create a variety of potential ensembles so that all your furniture can remain free of toxic chemicals!

I ran across this article in the New York Times and it obviously speaks to the EcoSelect customer mind-set. While it might raise an eyebrow to promote my competitors, the small furniture owners featured share a common vision of the future we're trying to create and we face many of the same challenges mentioned throughout the piece.

There is definitely one statement an owner made near the end of the column that is part of our company’s mantra: Building furniture that is meant to last a lifetime and be passed down through generations.

It also speaks to the spirit of the individual who want to express themselves, not just with words, but with action -- it's important for shoppers to be part of the process of the products they buy, as it gives a greater understanding of the kind of environmental and economical impact caused before making a purchase.

It's a promising outlook for the conscious, younger shopper that wants to do business a better way, moving away from the mega stores that represent a homogenized consumer economy with limited choices or too many choices (not quite right for you). Customization is part of our identity and sense of being, just like the type of shoes we wear to the apps we arrange on our smartphones – and when you think about it, many of us wait months for the next smartphone to be delivered after ordering it!Eco-Friendly Kenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12394138812285391565noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7593952602423043052.post-50182724541650723912016-10-17T19:40:00.003-07:002016-10-17T19:55:34.965-07:00Witches, Goblins, and ToxinsOctober is the month of scary witches and goblins! Unfortunately, it’s also turning out to be more frightening than usual. With the extreme weather brought by Hurricane Matthew, here in Charleston, South Carolina, we were on guard, unsure of what the shifting patterns would bring to the area. All turned out pretty well here, though some clean-up was needed. The factory in North Carolina was not affected, despite the $1.5 billion in damage state officials estimated the storm caused. Our thoughts and prayers go out to families that suffered losses.

Climate change, chemicals in our homes, and toxins in our furniture are all pieces of the environmental picture. Ramifications connected to the disruption of nature may seem unrelated to our daily lives until we feel the results either directly or overtly.

We're experiencing the circumstances of disrupting and polluting our ecosystems as it becomes more evident the balance of our earthly cycles is increasingly upset.

Rising temperatures impact these natural cycles. The habitats and behaviors of birds and insects are a reflection of this fact as they try to adapt to new conditions and challenges. As a result, swaths of American forests are being infested with beetles, with trees suffering defoliation and dying. Forest fires have also become prevalent.

It’s all interrelated.

Toxins in sofa materials negatively damage the health of kids, adults, and pets. This can include skin, eye, and respiratory reactions. For our youngest children, harmful contaminants taken out of infant clothes but still remaining in fire retardants can translate into lower IQs, cognitive, and learning disorders. Among firefighters, who are on the front line of contact with the chemicals released in home fires, cancer is on the rise.

As Halloween approaches, remember that the ghouls and goblins we don’t see can have consequences. EcoSelect believes that each of us, whether as individuals or as a business entity, play a role in keeping the planet safe. When you enjoy your candy and treats this October 30th, know that when you sit on our furniture, there will be no hidden surprises lurking like ghosts!Eco-Friendly Kenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12394138812285391565noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7593952602423043052.post-23473937765585079452016-09-09T18:52:00.000-07:002016-09-09T20:41:24.779-07:00Why EcoSelect is an Online Only Furniture Company

I want to answer a specific question that many of those new to EcoSelect have asked.

For some consumers, initially, purchasing a larger ticket item on the Internet may be a new experience. In the case of furniture, there may be some trepidation about not being able to sit on an actual chair or sofa.

However, particularly with the latest iteration of our website, we have found that clients are extremely pleased with the ease of navigation through our “Collection” styles, and in depth information on our back story and values.

As a family-owned business, we enjoy the personal contact we have developed with those who have connected with us via a search for toxic-free furniture, social media tools (Twitter, Facebook, Google+), in the green space, or direct shout-outs from the blogosphere (Check our kudos from Greenwake!).

Every day, I conduct conversations that morph from answering a few simple introductory inquires, to a deep dive on the story of how flame retardants got into our furniture in the first place. The dialogue inevitably becomes more personal and specific. What kind of household do you have? Are there children or pets? How big is your living space?

A walk through on these issues gives me a picture of which collections would best suit an individual’s taste and sensibilities. (Full disclosure: I’ve been in the furniture biz for 40 years!)

I understand how a sleep sofa can create additional options for an urban dweller, and why a sectional is a perfect centerpiece in a large, suburban living room. Accents and details are key, so I make sure that purchasers feel secure about their choice of foot styles, wood colors, and whether they really want nail heads.

We send out samples of fabric and leather in potential color considerations, so that you can experience how they feel and look in your décor. Every item is made to order, so if you are exceptionally tall folks, we will also factor that into the equation. Once you have been through that process, read through our testimonials to see what actual buyers have said.

Finally, big advantages of not owning a showroom and inventory warehouse allow us to keep our carbon footprint low and pass savings to the customer by eliminating high overhead costs. And, while the factory is located in Hickory, N.C., our office headquarters is based in South Carolina, thereby allowing all out-of-state orders to be purchased without sales tax. This combination allows us to deliver luxurious, high-quality furniture at very competitive prices.

We are always a phone call (843-737-5701), or e-mail away. We're available Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. (EST). It is always gratifying to know that your company’s product has received a top rating from an established entity like the Better Business Bureau.

We just heard from the Better Business Bureau that our grade was once again an A+!

Over the last twelve months, 68 people checked out our listing to learn more about us. We are also a member of the Sustainable Furnishing Council and a certified Green Plus business.

Yet, the shout-outs we get on our Social Media platforms are our greatest sources of satisfaction. It is genuine customer approval, a word of mouth recommendation from one person to others with similar values and concerns.

On Facebook, we have a 5-star rating. We frequently get “Likes” and messages posted by those customers who are thrilled to have found a source for both safe, fire-retardant free furniture and designs reflecting style and elegance.

Recently, I got a personal note, which the sender told me I could share:

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">"Hi Ken,
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">I am so grateful to have a high-quality, non-toxic couch! The more I researched chemical flame-retardants and the other toxic ingredients of most sofas, the more I didn't want our family exposed to that. Most non-toxic sofas are rather prohibitively expensive, but I read several online sources pointing to EcoSelect.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Our sofa arrived a few days ago, and I am so pleased with how attractive and well-made it is and comfortable! It really adds a nice air to our living room, and best of all, no toxic smells. Your gracious and responsive customer service has been greatly appreciated as well. Thank you!
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Blessings,
As the earth’s environment faces continuing challenges, we feel that the small difference we are making in our corner of the world is having ripple effects. The more consumers understand their options, the more they will push back against products that are harmful.

One of the top-repeated bits in the Larry David pantheon of comedy is his earnestly posed question, “Do you respect wood?” Brought on by an incident where a wet-bottomed glass left a ring on an antique table, Larry went on a quest to uncover the guilty party and determine if others in his circle respected the beauty and importance of wood -- regardless of high or low origin.

Too bad Larry never got to meet J. Sterling Morton, the founder and innovator behind National Arbor Day.

Morton moved to the territory of Nebraska in 1854. There, while editing the Nebraska City News, he promoted the planting of trees. Morton emphasized both their value in industry, as well as their importance in the larger ecosystem. He understood that trees could provide relief from the heat and protect the topsoil of the plains, which was at risk of being displaced by gusty winds.

Using his position as secretary of the Nebraska Territory, Morton introduced the concept of a tree planting commemorative day, which he named Arbor Day. He proclaimed, “Each generation takes the earth as trustees.” His state planted over one million trees on that first holiday. When Morton served as Secretary of Agriculture under President Grover Cleveland (1893-1896), he was active in setting up America’s “national forest reservations.”

The holiday is usually celebrated the last Friday in April, although some localities pick dates within the month that are more conducive to planting saplings in their specific area.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has stated, “The net cooling effect of a young, healthy tree is equivalent to ten room-size air conditioners operating twenty hours a day. One acre of forest absorbs six tons of carbon dioxide and puts out four tons of oxygen. This is enough to meet the annual needs of 18 people.”

Just like Morton, EcoSelect understands that trees help to clean the air, produce oxygen, serve as a home to birds and other animals, and yields innumerable paper and wood products.
Deforestation is a primary contributor to CO2 additions to global warming. It is responsible for about 24 percent of the CO2 additions. This is especially apparent in areas including Southern Asia and China.

The good news for the United States is that our forests are growing, and expected to jump another 15 to 20 percent by 2050. This is important because over the past half century, there has been a 39 percent increase in the volume of wood and paper products produced per cubic foot of wood input.
The lumber for all of our furniture is completely sourced in Western North Carolina and Tennessee -- not from national forests. The mills we use are certified under the Sustainable Forestry Initiative and follow their guidelines for forest management. The local sourcing also means that there is smaller carbon footprint, since transportation costs are low.

Maple or Poplar is the genus of wood that we use. Both are plentiful and fast-growing, which makes it a sustainable species. Additionally, they are moderately dense and straight grained, which allows for good screw- holding ability and reduces warping or twisting.

Our frame construction utilizes smaller dimension stock and short lengths to maximize the yield from any single tree, and because we use only hardwood lumber (no plywood), absolutely no formaldehyde adhesives are used.

So, yes Mr. Larry David, EcoSelect respects wood!

It’s March, and we’re sure Spring cleaning is on your to-do list.

When you throw open your windows to bring fresh air into your home one thing you will never have to worry about is off-gassing from EcoSelect furniture contributing to indoor pollution concerns.

There are no fire-retardant chemicals in our components, and our wood is certified lumber. Also, absolutely no formaldehyde from glues that are used to form particle boards. Our foam meets the “Certipur” standards for the absence of heavy metals and other toxins.

With climate change hastening an earlier and longer occurrence of the pollen season as well as increased carbon dioxide levels from man-made emissions those with allergies are looking for any remedies that will minimize their exposure to irritants.

We have one! Indoor pollution is as concerning as what is transpiring outside, so we have recently implemented a new option in response to customer demand. We are offering dust mite proof fabric for application to the bottoms of our sofas and chairs. The weave of this white material is “extra tight.”

General furniture upkeep is simple. As part of your daily routine, hemp coverings should be vacuumed frequently with an upholstery brush. Lift up cushions to check for accumulation of pet hair or crumbs! Spot cleaning can be accomplished with mild soap and water. Leather should be regularly dusted. Spills can be cleaned up by a sponge dampened with water.

Some advice from my wife, Ann: “Skip the heavy duty cleaners from the supermarket.” Her favorite remedy is a combo mixture of hot water, baking soda, and vinegar. Sometimes she adds a few drops of lavender oil for a calming scent.

We have lots of plants in our home to counteract any lurking toxins. English ivy and the durable snake plant are two of our favorites!

Don’t forget to recycle those old newspapers and magazines you didn’t trash all winter. We just dropped off a box of home electronics to a local store that has a twice a year program disposal program.

Happy cleaning!

Most of our customers are well aware of our use of hemp fabrics, which we offer in six colors (Expresso, Bamboo, Loden, Natural, Taupe, and Toffee). What they may not know is that George Washington grew hemp at his Mount Vernon plantation estate, and fostered its development.

Washington believed in the commercial value of hemp for its wide range of uses. He saw that at a time when ships predominated, it could be used to make rope, sails, and fishing nets. Additionally, he envisioned hemp fibers being turned into the threads that would create clothing, possibly rivaling cotton.

A “gentleman farmer,” Washington was interested in experimenting with agricultural methods in order to establish new practices that could create superior products. He was a sharp business man, and understood that the hemp plant could be cultivated even on land that was not terribly productive in yielding other crops.

In his diaries, Washington wrote about hemp over ninety times including his objective of finding the best types of seeds. He was knowledgeable about the varieties that were grown in East India and New Zealand. He understood the importance of the fact that all parts of the industrial hemp plant could be monetized. Beyond using the fibers for paper (what the Declaration of Independence was drafted on), rope, and cloth, he had the seeds pressed to extract their oil.

In 1791, Washington wrote to the Secretary of Finance, Alexander Hamilton (the letter is in the Library of Congress), suggesting that growing hemp could help the average citizen. He added that it merited “the serious attention of Congress.”

EcoSelect has chosen hemp rather than cotton for its furniture for numerous reasons. We love that it has greater mildew resistance than cotton. The plant grows easily in a range of temperatures and soils, and the resulting fibers are stronger than cotton. It doesn’t need herbicides or pesticides, unlike cotton, which is the recipient of half the world’s pesticide usage.
We always send out samples of our hemp fabrics so customers can get an accurate impression of the color. In order to make certain that sofas and chairs match perfectly, we make sure that a complete order come from one dye-lot.

So, on this President’s Day, I would like to personally thank George Washington for being an early supporter and promoter of hemp!
At EcoSelect, our goal is to have customers be an integral part of their sofa design and purchase experience. That is why we discuss with individual buyers exactly what their needs are.

Often, I ask a series of questions to determine if any of the people who will regularly be using the sofa is above average height or on the shorter side. Why? So that our craftsman can change the seating height of the piece by simply adjusting the size of the feet. An inch modification higher or lower will make a great difference in the comfort of the sofa. It will give taller folks more thigh support, and give shorter folks the ability to have their feet flat on the floor. It will facilitate sitting down and getting up.

All of our “styles,” with the exception of the Georgetown line, offer four different choices for the supporting “feet” of the sofa. They are the square, bun, turned, and tapered options. As you go deeper into the style line on the website, you will see a window that opens showing the possibilities. While we have selected the foot style that we believe most strongly complements the style of the piece itself, there is no hard and fast rule. We look at the bigger picture. This means discussing changing the standard foot to be more of a match to your pre-existing decorating style, or other pieces in your space.

One of our most popular items, particularly for those city dwellers that live in apartments, is the sleep-sofa. The majority of our designs can be converted, and they come with an eco-friendly coil spring mattress and a recycled steel frame. There is an additional

charge, but it provides the “extra room” capability that most of our urban customers need so desperately!

Our chairs can be ordered as full recliners. They come with a “push-back” mechanism (which means no handle is required), or chairs can be ordered with a swivel base so everyone can participate in a conversation and also see the TV more comfortably.

Another way to alter the upholstery is to change the cushion construction. Our standard seat cushion has a center coil spring unit covered in foam on both sides, then wrapped in pillow fiber and put in a cotton bag. That entire cushion core is inserted into the fabric or leather cover, which has zippers so the cover can be removed for cleaning or replacement. However, if you want an ultra-soft, plushier feel we offer a cushion that has 50 percent down/ feathers and 50 percent fiber—without the coil spring interior. This creates the feeling of sinking down into the cushion. Periodic “fluffing” to maintain the cushion’s shape is required, and there is an additional fee based on the materials.

We also do pure custom work, so if you have a photo of your dream sofa and would like us to give you a quote on it, you can send it in and we will take a look!

In addition to sofas, chairs, and loveseats, we have added items based on popular demand. Our ottomans come either as a storage-formulated piece, or a simply shaped square or rectangle. They are great for putting your feet up—or as an additional seating unit when you have extra guests. Several clients have asked for matching pillows, so that is now a regularly offered item.

The most important fact about our lines is that they have no toxic chemicals or fire retardants. So while you may consider making changes to our set styles, sizes, and furniture feet, you will never have to worry about your family’s safety!

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">As the year comes to a close, I am excited about what EcoSelect has achieved in 2015 and where we are going in 2016. We are happy to invest in delivering eco-conscious products to a growing community of consumers are on the same page about our future – there is a nexus between sustainable business practices that are based on delivering products free of materials that add to environmental problems.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I have been watching and reading the news from the COP21 conference at Paris.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">In line with the COP21 call to companies to get involved with the fight to keep the safety of future generation on course, we will do our part communicating how to take a stance on climate change. We agree with the 97-percent of climate scientists who believe that “climate-warming trends over the past century are very likely due to human activities.”

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Families with young children, after a long search for non-toxic, eco-friendly furniture are relieved to find our products.

The saying "What goes California, goes the rest of the Country" definitely applied to the furniture industry and was the main driving force that pushed the industry to include toxic flame retardants in all manufactured upholstered furniture sold across the U.S.

Beginning January 1, 2014, California changed its flammability requirements. Theoretically, this allows upholstery to be sold in California that does not have flame retardant chemicals added. The new focus will be on testing smoldering sources of flammability in cover fabrics, barrier materials and the covers under the cushions and on top of the base springs.

Furniture Today, an industry newspaper, published a robust article by Cindy W, Hodnett entitled, “Industry Reacts to New California Flammability Standards.” Several people in the furniture space are quoted—including Roy Calcagne, President of the upholstery source, Craft-master Furniture. Calcagne said, "We will comply with the new requirements as mandated by law. I think the fewer chemicals, the better."

Unsurprisingly, there has been substantial push back against the new standards from the American Chemical Council’s North American Flame Retardant Alliance. They put out a statement opposing the revisions stating, “Families in California should have serious concerns that state officials are lowering the fire standards and removing an important layer of fire protection that has benefitted Californians for more than 35 years.”

In direct opposition to their opinion is Dr. Arlene Blum, a major figure in the new documentary “Toxic Hot Seat” (reviewed on our site). The woman who got deadly chemicals out of children’s sleepwear, Blum emphasized, “It astounds me that the chemical companies are still claiming there is no health benefit to removing these chemicals.”

As expected, many customers still want these toxic chemical in their furniture, and many manufactures are willing to meet these customer demands. A prudent consumer needs to be educated and proactive about learning if their furniture purchase contains chemical laden flame resistant foam or fabrics.

Toxic Hot Seat Ignites Awareness

Toxic Hot Seat, a new documentary directed by James Redford and Kirby Walker, takes an in-depth look at chemical flame retardants. It interweaves the multiple narratives of investigative reporters, scientists, lawmakers and community activists as they fight for transparency around a 1975 law. That piece of legislation, California Technical Bulletin 117 (TB-117), was enacted to eradicate fires in the home caused by cigarettes. What ensued were health hazards Americans were unaware of and years of disinformation promoted by those with big money at stake. At the core of the film stands the investigative work of three Chicago Tribune reporters who put the story on the map with their series, “Playing With Fire.” As they sift through the facts, the circle expands to connect their findings to the other key players in the account.

One of the top takeaways for the general public is the startling information that there are approximately 84,000 chemicals being used commercially in the country. They include home cleaning agents and flame retardants in furniture. Even more problematic is that the majority hasn’t been tested for safety—and are exempt from regulations.

When it was determined that cigarette-induced furniture fires were a primary cause of injuries and deaths from fires in the home, the tobacco industry was pressed to develop a “fire safe cigarette” that could extinguish on its own. However, the decision makers for tobacco asserted that it wasn’t their responsibility to prevent these fires. Rather, they shifted culpability to furniture makers. Bolstered by support from the National Association of State Fire Marshalls (their site has a PDF rebuttal to Chicago Tribune allegations), the initiative to alter the equation fell to the furniture industry. They were pegged as the “fuel,” as opposed to the cigarette manufacturers who were just the “igniters.”

When California put TB-117 into play—mandating fire retardants in furniture—manufacturers adopted the guidelines for all production in order to avoid developing two different product lines.

One of first groups to become aware of a correlation between flame retardants and health was fire fighters. We are introduced to Tony Stefani, a retired fire department captain turned activist. He was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer. With other members of the San Francisco Fire Department getting ill, Stefani began exploring. He learned that when flame retardants burn they turn into toxic chemicals; fires in essence become “toxic soups.” Statistics now show that in a demographic of San Francisco women firefighters in the 40 to 50 year old demographic, the rate of breast cancer is six times the national average.

Dr. Arlene Blum, recognized for getting flame retardants with cancer causing chemicals out of children’s sleepwear, is a primary voice elucidating the science behind the chemistry. Several of the flame retardants currently in use are from a group of chemicals that include the banned substances of PCBs and DDT. They enter the body, bioaccumulate, and create havoc with the human system.

PBDEs, which often come out of the flame retardants in cushion foam and then attach to dust particles, are present in over 90 percent of American homes. Women with elevated amounts take twice as long to become pregnant. Children with higher levels at birth have a four to six point deficit in their IQs. PBDEs have been linked to impaired cognitive and behavioral problems, as well as increased rates of birth defects, and are found in amniotic fluid and breast milk. Children have three times more of these chemicals in their bodies than adults.

The American Chemistry Council declined requests from Redford and Walker to be interviewed for the film. However, they have posted a press release on their site charging, “New Docudrama Misleads the Public on Flame Retardants.” Another angle that was underscored by Chicago Tribune journalists Sam Roe and Patricia Callahan was the distortion by the chemical industry of a study conducted by fire protection engineer Vytenis Babrawskas. Babrawskas told the Tribune writers in their article, "[the] Industry has used this study in ways that are improper and untruthful."

It should be noted that the top three companies generating the bulk of flame retardants on the market make over 3 billions pounds of these chemicals annually. This gives rise to “a market worth over $5 billion.

Pingree delivers one of the strongest lines in the movie when she appears in front of Sen. Barbara Boxer and the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works at a hearing on July 24, 2012. The witnesses included Stefani, as well as a lawyer and an “advocacy” representative for the chemical industries. Stefani told Boxer and the committee:The final piece of the puzzle was the legislators who began introducing bills in 2004-2005 to push back against the big money interests. California State Senator Mark Leno and Maine representative Hannah Pingree presented numerous bills to ban flame retardants. Their efforts were met with a $6 million press campaign push led by the chemical industry. Maine saw more success than California. Pingree’s actions resulted in a statewide ban against flame retardants. Repeatedly, the bills put forth by Leno were defeated. Then, in May 2012, the Chicago Tribune published the first installment of their exposé. In June of 2012, California Governor Jerry Brown released a statement in which he directed state agencies to revise the flammability standards. Just this month, Brown announced new standards to reduce toxic chemicals in furniture for his state.

“I don’t trust these companies to tell the truth about their
chemicals, and I don’t think the American public or you as
Senators should either.”

The film has a link on their website to connect with Safer Chemicals, Healthy Families, to mobilize the public through additional information and action campaigns.
